Socially Yours, Librariandoa

 The original DOA blog, which you're reading again through the miracle of modern something or other, was always supposed to be a social sharing type site. 

In that spirit, I've revived my Twitter account  @Librariandoa

...and dug deep through notebooks to find my Instagram login.  The account was created in 2019 and not used at all but you'll soon find pictures and content.  Instagram is just Librariandoa.

I Miss Twitter

I closed my Twitter account last month.  I had been ignoring the new Privacy warnings you'd see when you logged in, but finally looked at it.

Yow, they advise you they'll be selling your email, personal information and browser history to advertisers.  Now that's intrusive.

I killed off the account, and lo, this is the last bastion of Librarian DOA, created in 2008 for the Things on a Stick program.  Heady times, those!

I'm thinking I need to find a way to get more posts in, and liven things up here on DOA.  You know how it is, sometimes even when there are lots of ideas, nothings gets written here (absorbed by my ever present notebook).

In any case, I did like Twitter, as a fun, light sort of newsreel of events.  It was all gardens and authors and movies and tv and cooking in my Feed.  Life: The Good Parts Version (Princess Bride Reference).   So some days I think of creating a sneak account for something innocuous like DumboPie whose personal information and email leads nowhere, and whose browser history is a cipher.   Hehehe.

Twitter Notes

I found this old (2009) cartoon I had created in the now defunct Toonlet regarding Twitter Followers. 

I just don't get how people even find me to follow, particularly the Women In Thongs with their behinds raised to the camera...eeww, do you sincerely mind?  I also wonder why those accounts don't get popped by Twitter.  I've gotten so any new follower with a profile pic of a young woman with a certain look in her eyes...I don't look at the posts, I just hit the block button.

I haven't many followers even though I've been active for awhile now.  I could have more, Thong Women excepted--but my policy is to follow or block.  I look at the persons profile and posts and if I feel they're someone with my interests who might be interested in what I have to say, I follow them, if not, I just block em.  I also look at how many people they're following and are being followed by.  The folks who follow ten trillion people and are followed by the same number or a low number...hinky city.  If I looked at my own numbers, I think hinky city, lol.  Pay attention, people.

Followers aside, I find Twitter to be a much more pleasant place than Facebook ever was, there is a much more positive attitude, but maybe I only follow perky people.

DOA Lives!

Everywhere but Facebook.  I've found many of my FB Author friends on Twitter, and most entertainment, gardening and cooking sites.

Twitter doesn't have a community feel, as FB did, but as a newsreel sort of thing, it's fine. I think I've found five people I actually know so far, and they Tweet little, but many weren't very active on FB either.

I am grateful that my Twitter feed isn't full of politics, hateful diatribes and hardly anything on the Kardashians.  There was all too much of those things in my FB timeline.

On the other hand, I get followed by more naked women (or so they appear) on Twitter, so I just watch my followers and block them.

The 20 Most Popular Twitter Users via Mashable

Mashable has an article about an alleged "accept bug" which would allow you to type in a command based Tweet and have anyone follow you on Twitter, even celebrities who would never think of acknowledging your existence in the Twitterverse.

The most popular target was Oprah, who beat out Obama and Lady Gaga (by a mere squeek on Gaga) amongst others.




My Twitter account comes and goes. I am currently confining my interests to book and garden related folks.

I'm still picking up a few sales and marketing followers, and I block them along with all of the girlz who have "hot pics" to share.

Twitter seems to have changed a bit. I find the Retweets of updates by people I'm not interested in to be pretty annoying.

Where it hasn't changed is in the lag, and the "oh no something went wrong" messages.

As always, I don't read Tweets much, but I do think I may have more totally useless Tweets out there myself than I have had in any previous incarnations.

I prefer Facebook where people can have semi-normal "conversations". The 140 character limit for a blah blah blah person like myself isn't quite enough.

Not that I'm feeling anti-social 2.0 or anything, but...

I deleted my Twitter and Facebook accounts, so here's the place to see henceforth what is on my tiny little mind. Cheers 2.0-ers.

More Things on a Stick Thing 31: More Twitter!!!!

Twitter is most informative and entertaining. I have found over 800 interesting people to "Follow" and, somehow I have over 400 "Followers" though I don't say much.

Our 23 Things guides have us look at Tweet Effect to see what we might have said to gain or lose followers.

My "Tweet Effect" says: "In the last 200 updates you had no changes in your follower numbers. Loyal readers, you have." Yoda!

Actually, since I subscribe to yet another such service, called Qwitter I know I lost 5 followers on Income Tax night with a cheery Tweet that common tax forms were outside the front door for the late and desperately taxed.



Tweet Viewers

It looks like there are several Twitter aids that help manage your Twitter displays. They require downloads. I wonder if viewing through these readers is as ponderously slow as Twitter itself has become. They look more heavily graphical so I am not sure it is a good thing to add anything in.

Betwittered has a nice blog page called 32 Hours that explains their service and Twitter itself.

Tweet Deck's display looks slick, dividing the screen into four columns, including one with Facebook freinds status so you can keep tabs 24/7.

I was installing this at home and doing so let me know that the application would give the software complete system access. "Unrestricted Access" was the term. I don't think a piece of software that organizes Twitter needs access to all of my files. So no Tweet Deck for me.

Mobile Twittering

Maybe ok if you're stuck in the airport or under the drill at the dentist's but otherwise...I picture this girl I saw driving down the road last week, head turned to the side thumbing her phone rather than watching the road even a little. Scary.



I looked at some of the other sites on the More Things site, but they aren't useful for my purposes. I have more followers than I need, and now I've reached my secret goal of 400, I'm going to start Tweeting one of these days and that might clear the decks faster than Tax Form notes!

In the meantime, here are the More Things "Do" and Blog about questions and answers.

1. Explore some different ways to view and post to Twitter. What works best for you and why? I did take a look at Tweet Deck and Betwittered, but they don't add enough to be useful, and that "unrestricted access" for Tweet Deck is a bad idea.

2. Have you made Twitter part of your social networking plan? Not really. Why or why not? It is more of an entertaining newsite for me so I don't feel it is a problem to miss anything that might fly by. So I am not getting it sent to my email or phone or anyplace but where it naturally resides. Have you integrated Twitter into any of your other socialmedia sites? Again no, I see it as a standalone application. What do you use it for? I have many interests and I find it relaxing to look through a few pages of updates now and then. That is it!


3. Choose several of the fun things, try them out, and use at least one of them as the basis for a blog post. Include something visual in your post as an example. See visuals above in this long long post.


4. Add your name to the Tweeter Directory and tell us more about it in your blog. I added myself under "bloggers" in the directory rather than in the librarian section because I have three blogs, all different and heaven forbid I should be pigeonholed.


5. Use one of the the alerting or scheduling tools for Twitter. How did it work for you? Can you see how this might be useful? I refuse!


6. Read this post from The Next Web and use it as a Blog Prompt to tell us where you are in the stages of Twitter. Interesting post. I am at stage two still, I think.

7. Here's a long list of what other people think Twitter is. What do you think Twitter is? Include this in your blog post about this thing. I think Twitter is a great place to get little bytes of information. I do think that for many who want to get the word out about themselves, this is a very easy to use, low tech way of doing it. The learning curve and tech saavy required is so minimal, and the potential for reaching a wide readership is phenomenal.

More Things on a Stick Thing 27: Twitter

Until recently, I didn't see that Twitter had much to offer. Suddenly, in the last couple of weeks I think it is a great "newsfeed" of truly interesting information. Once I knew there were news sources, and book publishers and authors and game people out there updating their followers I was hooked.

Twitter goes far beyond the stated "what are you doing now" in most cases. It is a fascinating window on the worlds of many people. Each 140 character or less entry is easily read and absorbed on the fly. It isn't like a website or even blog where you would like to be able to spend some time reading the entry--they're here and gone.

Some of the Twitter tools and mashups let you read Twitter from other devices or emails, but since I "Follow" over 300 people I don't really want to have those notes in my emails, or on my phone. I prefer to just take a peek at what is happening when I have a chance.

If there is a particular person who you don't want to miss, just go to their page and all of their updates are there. You can see a person's page and updates without even signing in to Twitter by going to Google and typing their Twitter name and the word Twitter. For instance search "librariandoa Twitter" on Google and all my recent updates are right there. Very quick!

I like finding interesting Tweeters so much I have a mystery authors list here on my blog (it is hard to find people by subject), and I had the idea to interview an author "live" on Twitter and actually did it. It went really well, thanks to the graciousness of the subject, author Bill Crider.

In the couple of weeks I have been really enjoying Twitter, the "too many Tweets whale" has appeared with increasing frequency. Also, there is a new wrinkle wherein Twitter is "stressed out" and you are unable to search for new Tweeters :(

In the meantime, I'll have to comb Twellow, Twitterholic, and wefollow for bright shiny new peeps...or is that Tweeps?

Suspended for "Strange Activity" "Nothing to see here, move along!" This was not the Christopher Walken Twitter account that was apparently suspended last week for the same thing. Bad, bad Twitterers.

MalTweeted #5: the Final Episode

I'll keep tweeting and reading tweets, but this is all for the cartoon series. Next up, once I get a better feel for it, that other "social utility" Facebook.

(I used Twitter to make sure the toon text ended right in the 140 character limit, that's why it ends suddenly as it does, in case you didn't catch the irony or whatever it may be).

MalTweeted #4 The Sad Loss of a Follower

As you follow people on Twitter and Tweet yourself, you will find some days you gain Followers and then you lose some.

Don't take it to heart when you lose a fan. There is a site called Qwitter that will email you when someone stops following you, and let you know the last thing you posted before they went *poof*

I don't have the exact language of the mail because I haven't gotten one from them them yet, but you get the idea.

MalTweeted #3 :When you're new to Twitter, any new follower is a fun surprise

I had my Twitter account for a long time and didn't do much with it. Even so, I've gotten emails over time that so and so was following me on Twitter and since I wrote nothing, what could they be following? Still, it seemed a little flattering and it made me feel guilty wondering what these unknown people were looking for.

In the last week or so, since I've started looking for people of interest to me, I've had a great time myself finding interesting people to follow. I don't mind at all if they seldom update their Tweets, I'd be happy to hear anything at all they have to say. I'm fascinated by the news organizations and their short posts, and by those who can convey thoughts effectively in the 140 characters allowed by Twitter. It is not easy to do.

I made up the name of my Follower here, but it came to me in a flash yesterday morning. I haven't "met" anyone with quite that name, but many people have that sort of name or spirit, that's for sure. I've enjoyed seeing what "screen names" and "character names" people come up with since way back in the early 90s when my husband and I played a Trivial Pursuit competion against other players on the now long defunct Delphi Internet Services. I still have my "U Belong on Delphi" T-shirt.
