Merry Christmas, all. This is from a book of Christmasy things, via Project Gutenberg. It reminds me of a certain Mr. DOA of late.
Here's the answer key for some of the opening lines of So Big by Edna Ferber.
Until he was almost ten the name stuck to him. He had literally to fight his way free of it. From So Big (of fond and infantile derivation) it had been condensed into Sobig. And Sobig DeJong, in all its consonantal disharmony, he had remained until he was a ten year old schoolboy in that incredibly Dutch district southwest of Chicago known first as New Holland and later as high Prairie. At ten, by dint of fists, teeth, copper-toed boots, and temper, he earned the right to be called by his real name, Dirk DeJong. Now and then, of course, the nickname bobbed up and had to be subdued in a brief and bitter skirmish. His mother, with whom the name had originated, was the worst offender.

Good evening, puzzle fans. Here's a substitution cipher of the first lines of a book, as always.
Wasn't that fun. Back to Project Gutenberg for this puzzle. I searched Fairy Tales and found The Starlight Wonder Book by Henry Beston. A young man is rewarded with a wand that can make things very large or very small. Rather like the puzzle text.
Once upon a time, during a great battle which was fought through the night in a tempest of lightning and rain, a brave young grenadier came upon one of the enemy lying sorely wounded on the field. Taking pity upon his foeman, the soldier bound up his wounds and carried him from the battle to the shelter of a little wood. Scarce had the wounded youth opened his eyes, when amid a blinding flash of lightning and a peal of tumbling thunder, a green chariot drawn by green dragons rushed downward through the hurrying clouds and sank to earth at the soldier’s side.
