DOA On TV: Paradise, Best Medicine, Doc, Young Sherlock, The Pitt, Starfleet Academy

 

Paradise A Holy Charge

While much happens in the episode, the part that keeps coming to mind is Xavier traveling on horseback to Atlanta with Annie’s baby in a little pack.  Teri has been “taken” says her friend, while an angry Xavier holds a gun in his direction.    That mayday message of Xavier’s where he gives his name, Teri’s name, and the coordinates of the bunker and her last known location have got to be coming back to haunt him.

 

Best Medicine    Doc Martin

Martin Clunes, the original British Doc Martin comes to Port Wenn with his wife.  Martin is mostly cowed by the appearance of his parents, but the time he’s spent in town is beginning to rub off on him and he defends his adopted town from his scathing parents.  As the locals say, now we can see why Martin is the way he is.

 

Doc   The Best We Can Do

Richard Miller has forced his way back to working at the hospital, and he get’s a cold reception from nearly everyone.  Even so, he somehow gets under your skin and rooting for him a little bit.  I wouldn’t have thought that was possible.

 

Young Sherlock   The Case of the Missing Scrolls

I was looking forward to this, as I enjoyed just about every Sherlock incarnation I ‘ve seen.  The music, though! It screams and crashes and shrieks.   It in no way fits the time period, and if this show was set in modern times, I’d still not like it but wouldn’t notice it as much, I think.

I don’t mind Sherlock as a too smart for his own good teen, or having James Moriarty as his new best friend, they are oddly a good match.    

I’m not going to continue watching, though.

 

The Pitt 3 pm

July 4^th escalates as the first firecracker victim is brought in, his hand now missing two fingers.  He’s only 12, and seems awfully brave till we learn he’s legally intoxicated.

An old school nurse is brought in to help run the ER in it’s analog state.  She takes charge right away, and sorts everything out.  Can we keep her?

 

Star Fleet Academy    300^th Night

The first year is done for cadets and they’re graduating, with everyone traveling to Betazed, the new Federation capitol to celebrate.

Everyone but Caleb who, with Sam’s help, unlocks two years worth of encrypted messages from his mom.   Caleb, again  with Sam’s help, steals a shuttle to go find her though Braka is dropping mines at the edge of Federation space, making the trip just outside of it perilous.  Sam rather cruelly, I thought, traps Genesis and a drunken Darem in the shuttle.  

This episode could easily have been a season ender/ cliffhanger but there’s one more episode.

The Rookie  Baja

I am no fan of the Lucy undercover episodes.  She’s just too soft a character to be able to lie and be tough.  In this episode they have her paired in an operation with Harper, who spent a long time undercover and who can do anything.  Not a good comparison.

 

Will Trent   Call Paul

Another serial killer episode.  I really disliked Will finding himself in the mind of the killer and enjoying the kills.

 

Best Medicine   There Might Be Blood

Port Wenn, festival capital of the world, hosts their annual Blood Factory event.  This town is crazy.  There’s an annual event wherein they celebrate an awful sounding horror novel written by a local author.  There are re-enactments of scenes from the book, and problematically for Doc Best, there are copious amounts of fake blood.  He thinks his blood phobia will not kick in because he knows it’s not real, but his body reacts as if it is.

 

The Pitt 1pm

As always, there are many little moments that add up to my being surprised each week when the screen goes to black for the credits.

Langdon tries to apologize to Robbie, and Robbie says I want you out of my ER.  This destroys Langdon’s confidence for the rest of the hour.

Dr Al-Hashimi continues to act as if she’s in charge already, though she has another moment where she gets a one thousand yard stare, and then calls for an urgent appointment with a neurologist or a shrink?  It’s not clear, but something is very off.

Santos continues to ignore a deaf patient who has been waiting to be examined for hours, even though an in person interpreter has been found and is on site.  She just hasn’t the patience to deal with not being able to ask the patient her questions directly for some reason.  This is making me so angry.  Any other staff member would have found a way to help this woman.

The best thing about the episode is Dr Abbott charging into the ER in full SWAT gear, a volunteer position he’s taken.  He’s a wild but competent doctor, and I’m hoping he is the one to take over when Robbie goes on sabbatical.

We find out why the other hospital has shut down services.

 

Starfleet Academy   Ko’Zeine

A lackluster episode wherein there’s a holiday and all cadets are expected to leave the facility for a four day vacation.  Caleb of course won’t go, and to his surprise, Genesis ditches her family vacation time to try to get into her academy files.  The ever unlikeable Darem is kidnapped by his betrothed since childhood bride, and Jay-Den follows him through a portal, thinking he needs a rescue.

 

Night Agent  

In Istanbul, Peter works to find and bring to safety Jay Batra, a numbers guy who uncovered corruption in his organization and who is coveted by The Information Broker from last season.  I’ve only watched the first three episodes, but it’s great and so intense!

 

Doc and High Potential were not on this week and return March 3^rd.

 

The Rockford Files Reboot

In exciting news, Davide Boreanz will be starring in a re-boot of The Rockford Files.  Mom watched the show and I didn’t, but my love of James Garner goes back to the original Maverick TV series.  Can’t see Boreanz as Garner but I’m willing to give it a try.

 

New Pilot for Emily Deschanel

I watched all 12 seasons of Bones last year for the first time, then immediately re-watched season one.  I didn’t write about it, but it is one of my favorite shows ever.  I miss it terribly!  Now, Emily Deschanel, who played Temperance Brennan so brilliantly (alongside David Boreanz’s Seeley Booth)  will be starring in an untitled pilot that sounds perfect:

The Rookie Burn 4 Love

The Rookie, formerly one of the many Tuesday night shows has moved to Monday nights.  I watch it on Wednesdays though, with the usual Tuesday lineup.

This week featured sweet Valentine's moments, a curse which shouldn't have worked but seemed to be quite devastating, and a romantic pair who were causing small Swan Lake themed fires.  As if that weren't a busy enough episode, the ending was positively explosive.

Doc Trust

Poker, transplants and Sonya & TJ snooping into their boss Joan's personal business, more memories from the past for Amy, and the truly awful return of Dr Miller as part of a settlement with the hospital.  Everyone knows that he tried to hide his actions that led to the death of a patient, how's that going to go?

Best Medicine  Eyewitness Blues

Port Wenn's annual Blueberry festival is covered for a tiny audience by Elaine, with poor Doctor Best wielding a camera for her.  It puts him right into the thick of things, though, after he refused to be a judge in the blueberry pie baking contest.  The resident's are out for blueberry glory and are unusually ruthless as they compete.  Though I claim I could drop this show at any time, when I'm doing my Tuesday night show watch, I watch Doc first, then Best Medicine second every single time.

Will Trent     You're Not That Person Anymore

Part two of a set wherein poor Faith finally finds a really great guy who she thinks she might love, though they haven't known each other long.  Unfortunately for her, Malcolm is part of a gang that has been robbing banks while in costumes.

Angie is the one who isn't that person anymore.  She's about to have a baby and a good life she doesn't think she deserves.  Luckily Will, who has known her forever, convinces her she deserves all the good things.  Spoiler alert, Angie plans a surprise wedding ceremony in the place where she and Seth met, officiated by her longtime friend Franklin, with no one other than a bicyclist who happened by as their witness.  (sniff) It was so lovely.

The Pitt 12 pm

High noon on the Fourth of July and nothing is slowing down.  The episode focuses quite a bit on the nursing staff, and the many roles they play.  The alcoholic patient Louie, who has been an ER visitor for a long time and is known by everyone, didn't make it.  Everyone is affected, and there's a scene where head nurse Dana shows a new nurse how to clean and prepare a body for possible viewing by friends or relatives that is so touching.

Santos gets busted by a surgeon from upstairs after two AI related charting errors are caught and questioned.  I'm glad nobody died.

Starfleet Academy   Come, Let's Away

Excellent episode.  The cadets are on a training mission at a space graveyard.  They have one hour to bring a damaged ship called the Miyazaki online.  Cadets are in sets, some are on the bridge, some go to the ship.  65% is the best anyone has done over the years trying to complete the task.

Almost immediately, a hostile group of aliens called The Furies surrounds the ship and the Athena, boards the Miyazaki and takes the cadets and their mentor captive.  They're savage and are cannibals. While the mentor sacrifices himself, the cadets make their way to the bridge and try to defend it hoping the Athena will rescue them. Sam is able to interface with the ship and bring it more fully online.  They use a comic to show the confused ship computer what happened to her crew, very cool.

Back on the Athena, the Betazoid Tarima, who can reach Caleb telepathically, helps the cadets prepare to be rescued once they get the singularity online.  

With information from the villainous Nus Braka, she's able to be on the ship in real time and, having pulled out her ability dampener, she destroys the furies.

I don't like ongoing seemingly all powerful villains, and I don't like Braka.

DOA on TV for the Week of January 18-24 A Bit of Everything

 

It has been an exhausting week.  I watched all of my regular shows, and one new one that I haven't much to say about.  Unlike my usual babbling self, I haven't much to say about anything.  Here are my shows, keep in mind three CBS shows don't return till late February, so, yo.

 A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Sorry, wasn’t as charmed as I hoped then I fell asleep on and off. Think I will let this one go.

 

Terrific Tuesday Shows

The Rookie 

Back in good form with a mix of humor and a main story where a man is picked up by Nolan for sleeping in a community center. It’s the first time this seeming vagrant's prints have been run in years and he turns out to be a serial killer.

Best Medicine

I’m still engaged with this gentle comedy.  Martin Klunes, the OG Doc Martin was not in this week’s episode but Martin did some excellent doctor detection on a high schooler who had brittle bones.

 

Doc

Amy and the FBI traced the hospital email hacks and audio impersonations to a young doctor and her brother who felt Amy was the reason for their dad’s suicide.

 

High Potential

Captain Wagner, the new guy in town continues to annoy just about everyone and Soto tells him off. 

 

Will Trent

The show just keeps getting better and better.  Every character has so much going on.  Good thing they have Will, who powers through his own problems to save the day.

 

Fallout

The show continues to twist the stories in on themselves.  The Ghoul is rescued, never fear.  Vault 33 is on the road to perdition lead by Reggie.  Lucy attempts to dominate her dad.

 

Starfleet Academy

An excellent episode with the recruits competing with each other to lead their team in what must be a giant holodeck full of bad things, and an all out prank war with the War College.

 

The Pitt

It’s only 9 am and the place is swinging.  I enjoy the story lines that continue week to week and the loads of new stuff that just gets dumped on the staff.

 

The Closer

I'm up to season 5.  Still love the show and it's characters.  I'm not happy they shuffled Irene Daniels off of the show, with no real explanation.  They should have given her more to do, not less.  They have added Captain Sharon Raydor to the show, an Internal Affairs character who is awful with her breathy voice and her attempts to take over every single case.  I'm aware she takes over Major Crimes when The Closer completes season 7, but gack, I won't be watching that. 

 

 

DOA TV: TV Guide's The Most Anticipated Shows of Winter 2025-2026

 

Remember when the holiday season was full of boring re-runs and cheesy holiday specials (if you were lucky)?   Those bad old days are gone.  If you have a few choice streaming services, you can doze your way through a ton of great shows.  New, exciting shows!

Here's a list of upcoming shows from the ever reliable TV Guide.  These will get you through November, December, and into the new year.

From this list I have some I'll be certain to watch:

I've watched season one eight times, and am likely to watch it one more time before season two airs on December 17th.  

 

 

Coming out beginning tomorrow (November 26), the fifth and final season looks great.  I'm sorry to see the series go, but have enjoyed seeing the kids on other shows, and will be rooting for them.  Quality has been consistent in this series, its major flaw has been it takes too long between seasons.

 

 Coming January 15, the long awaited Starfleet Academy is looking to be a bit more Beverly Hills 90210 in Space than the training ground for a lifetime of adventure I was hoping for.  I hope I'm wrong!  I love my Star Trek.

 

 

 A psychological thriller with Jon Bernthal as a detective, and Tessa Thompson as a news anchor sounds good. I didn't realize that this is based on Alice Feeney's novel, though, yikes!  I've read several of her books but not this one.  So do I buy the book now, and ruin the show for myself or get it after I've seen the show so I can do the gloating thing about how much better the book is?  Hmmm.

 

 

Season four features Benedict Bridgerton, probably my least favorite of the Bridgerton siblings.  The series has been entertaining every time, though, so I'll keep the faith.

 

Intriguing But Unlikely To Watch

There are a couple I'd like to try, but I may not have the streaming service they're on (don't have Apple or Peacock), or I'm not so sure its for me.  I can always do my “watch an episode and decide” thing on the Netflix show.

 

 I'd really like to see these two actresses go head to head.  I worry the show might be too gritty, and dare I say, mean for me.

 

 I like the premise of a spy whose brain is hacked, but don't have Peacock.
