A Few More Seeds for the Garden

Ah, Burpee, you seed giant whose seeds are available everywhere.  I'm not sure if it's the weather or that my sister called this week and had purchased a bunch of vegetable seeds, but I find my self experiencing a bit of Seed Lust.

Note I am sticking with seeds that can be sown directly, since my light stand isn't practical this season.

I snapped these up at the grocery store.

I've tried a variety of morning glory varieties in recent years, but I always come back to Heavenly Blue as my favorite.

I have never grown Lima Beans before, but I do like beans, and let's give them a try!

I can grow cucumbers in my sleep, and like the Burpless variety.

Last year I grew a few seeds of Sunflower Teddy Bear and it is adorable.  I'd like a sea of Teddy Bear sunflowers.

I love Peas right from the garden, but so do all of the local pests. Try, try again, with this new variety.

Welcome to Seedy Saturday.  Here are pictures of the lovely posts I've seen this week with delectable flower and vegetable seeds of note.

I'll also add any seed acquisitions, plans and thoughts for my garden.

Where's The Pretty Packet?

A cold rainy/snowy Friday.

I've re-sorted all my seeds into direct and indoor starts.  Just need to wash out a few pots to pot up earlier plantings, and we'll be in business seed wise.

Have you ever noticed that Burpee Seeds are everywhere in stores, with appealing packets that make you want to plant like mad, but if you direct order, you get plain packets?

I'm learning a lot this spring.  For instance, I only got part of my order, and if you look in small print on the back of the packing sheet, it says your order may come from different locations across the country. 

In my case, several seed types I ordered are Heirloom varieties, and those did not come with my first set of seeds.  There is also not  a note if or when to expect they'll arrive from elsewhere.    I'm guessing everyone, like me, is just rattled and normal procedures aren't quite there.

I thought I'd note that I was talking to Mr. DOA about the companies which were temporarily only filling commercial orders.   This caused him to dream that he wanted seeds and he was a commercial grower, but they still wouldn't send him anything.  Maybe I should stop sharing garden tidbits with him for awhile.

Off The Rack: A Few New Seeds

I made a foray to get a few seeds and new seed mix.  Though I've tried to pare down on tomatoes in the past few seasons, I went for those.

My eight rows of Peas which were decimated last year are going to be tried again.  Mr. DOA is vowing to plunge some sort of extra protection under the ground near the veg fence this spring to prevent plundering.  Thumper cold be thwarted!

A few herbs.  Parsley is showing up in lots of recipes.  We love Cumin.  I always grow Basil.

Although I never have luck with California Wonder peppers, try, try again.  I really want Pole beans rather than Bush Beans this year.  The Bush Beans were also decimated.  Fly you high, little beans!  

I haven't had as much luck with Morning Glories as I'd like.  I haven't tried these varieties before.  This time I will start some inside and some outside and see how they do.

Garden Catalogs: Early Arrivals

It is bitterly cold as it hasn't been in ages.  Luckily, a gardener need never despair, or care about the current weather.  The new year's garden always lies ahead, and seed and plant catalogs fuel dreams of warm air, blue skies and sunshine.

My favorite catalog so far is from Park Seed.  The color photographs of the plants are larger and more stunning than ever.  They offer plants as well as seeds if there's something you'd like to try but don't feel confident growing from seed.

The dream plant from this catalog for me would be Rosa La Park.  I haven't grown roses for a long time, but maybe just one more try.

Jung Seeds and Plants

This year the Jung catalog is bursting with trees and shrubs and perennials that I'd love to impulse order.  Look at the cover. I'd love to try every one of those except the corn.  (Tragic things happen to corn when I try to grow it.  Last year the entire plants were just carried away by something.)   I'm not giving up forever, but I'm taking a break from corn heartbreak.

Although you can find many Burpee seeds in stores, their catalog is gorgeous and packed with such a variety of beautiful things.

Just arrived in today's mail is the Territorial Seed catalog.

I have such good results with their seeds.  They have a broad selection of herbs, vegetables and flowers.  Some of my favorite annuals the past couple of years have been nasturtiums, which trail beautifully from hanging pots all season.

Nasturtium Night and Day will be a stunner, I know.

Gurneys offers fruits and vegetables.  They make me wish I could grow grapes ( I tried once, of course I did).

So since we're dreaming, I'll pick RazzMatazz "the world's first continual fruiting grape."   "Easy to grow in a container."   That would solve some of my former problems in which the grapevine tried to take over the world.

Ready, Set, Germinate!

Renee's Garden Seeds has been posting tantalizing pictures from their seed catalog selections for a couple of months now.  I'm at the point all of a sudden where I want to order everything they have.

It really is a bit early in the season to be feeling Seed Lust, but I'm only human and am looking ahead to my first spring and summer EVER since I began gardening in the 80s where I will be able to pamper my seedlings and water and feed my plants as much as I want to, need to.  Incomprehensibly glorious.

Mine will probably come out the size of a cherry tomato, but, ah, isn't a large portion of the garden a dream of lovely, lovely perfect plants and a tomato the size of your head?  Yes, yes IT IS!

I have catalogs from last year I saved, but I'd like to grow more herbs (and use them fresh).  Several different lettuces, check.  A regular cucumber and one to try pickling.  I have never eaten a turnip, but reading perhaps a few too many food blogs makes me want to try one.  I want to try Kale for the health benefits (though Mr. DOA tried some and said it was awful.  Bitter tasting, perhaps?)  I'd like to try celery once more, that did well for me.  Gourds.  Pumpkins.  More potatoes, those were really excellent in my grow bag.

Pamper my three blueberry bushes.  Grow rhubarb.  Maybe get one of those three tier strawberry planters from Jung's.

Must make a list of seed catalogs I'd like and write for them now so I'm ready to sow my seeds in January.
