Jung Seed Order 2023

 I asked for these as a Valentines gift this year. My husband has been placing a seed or plant order for me Valentines for a long time. 

This time I’m trying an Incrediball Blush hydrangea for out front. I’ll have to protect the new shrub from rapacious rabbits. There are also a few daylilies and other perennials which have survived the onslaught somehow. Those will be moved to new spots.

Then just a few seeds.

The dream lives on of my making my own pickles.  I asked for new pint jars for Christmas. I will just pick these Alibi Hybrid Pickling Cucumbers at the right time and pop them into jars.

Little Gem Lettuce have perfect heads. Just right for a fresh salad.

For the teeny lettuce you need teeny tomatoes. Tomato Sweet Million can be eaten by the handful.

Garden Catalogs: Early Arrivals

It is bitterly cold as it hasn't been in ages.  Luckily, a gardener need never despair, or care about the current weather.  The new year's garden always lies ahead, and seed and plant catalogs fuel dreams of warm air, blue skies and sunshine.

My favorite catalog so far is from Park Seed.  The color photographs of the plants are larger and more stunning than ever.  They offer plants as well as seeds if there's something you'd like to try but don't feel confident growing from seed.

The dream plant from this catalog for me would be Rosa La Park.  I haven't grown roses for a long time, but maybe just one more try.

Jung Seeds and Plants

This year the Jung catalog is bursting with trees and shrubs and perennials that I'd love to impulse order.  Look at the cover. I'd love to try every one of those except the corn.  (Tragic things happen to corn when I try to grow it.  Last year the entire plants were just carried away by something.)   I'm not giving up forever, but I'm taking a break from corn heartbreak.

Although you can find many Burpee seeds in stores, their catalog is gorgeous and packed with such a variety of beautiful things.

Just arrived in today's mail is the Territorial Seed catalog.

I have such good results with their seeds.  They have a broad selection of herbs, vegetables and flowers.  Some of my favorite annuals the past couple of years have been nasturtiums, which trail beautifully from hanging pots all season.

Nasturtium Night and Day will be a stunner, I know.

Gurneys offers fruits and vegetables.  They make me wish I could grow grapes ( I tried once, of course I did).

So since we're dreaming, I'll pick RazzMatazz "the world's first continual fruiting grape."   "Easy to grow in a container."   That would solve some of my former problems in which the grapevine tried to take over the world.

Garden Planning 2017: Perennials

I've deconstructed and grassed over 90 % of my perennial gardens, so there isn't room for much.  I find myself wanting a few very large hostas nonetheless, maybe a couple of pink peonies, and in a rare sunny spot a rose or two.

Many of the garden catalogs that were in business when I was at the height of my gardening time are now gone.  Locally, most garden centers that I enjoyed visiting are gone as well.  I certainly miss them, particularly Linders.

There are still a few wonderful mail order garden sources.  I'm thinking of seeing what I can find next spring.

Klehm's Song Sparrow Farm and Nursery used to be just Klehm's.  They've always had a beautiful selection of perennials and peonies.  If I could only order from one company, they'd be it.

I ordered from them quite a bit in my early years.  Their selection has always been amazing, but I was not always happy with what arrived in the mail.  I saw an article recently on them trying to preserve a particular plant and its varieties, so I thought I'd try them once more.

I waited a long time to order from Jung, and I wish I had not.  They have much more than seeds, plants, shrubs, trees, all very nice upon arrival.  Also a wide selection of garden supplies you wont find elsewhere.

Well Sweep has a vast selection of herbs and perennials.  You'll almost certainly find what you're looking for here.  They offer soaps, oils and books to help you be successful. There are so many varieties of each plant type, it is lovely just browsing and dreaming.

Roses of Yesterday and Today

I don't know about you, but I've been in the mood to grow roses again.   With the demise of so many local nurseries, the selection of roses is almost non-existent here.  You might see those short cascading varieties....I can't think of the name.  No selection at all, if they even carry roses.

Enter Roses of Yesterday and Today with their lovely name and wonderful selection of roses from many eras.  I'm certain I'll find something to love here.
