My First Seed Order of 2023: Territorial Seeds

Here’s my first order of the season.  A peony that looks prettier than it’s name, snap peas, beans, nasturtium and cosmos.

I have little luck with peonies, but I can’t resist them.  Snap peas are lovely to eat right in the garden. 

Nasturtium, Cleome, and cosmos direct seed very nicely.

If you like Christmas Cactus (and the variants) it's hard to find the colors you want, as local nurseries tend to sell them without much fanfare or selection.    Logee's Greenhouse to the rescue.

I have come to love vining plants, but haven't tried a Black Eyed Susan type before.  The pink shades of this Blushing Black Eyed Susan Vine will change that.

Remember that giant bean that could be a whole meal?  For alternate days, try a gigantic Cellobunch carrot.

From John Scheepers, the gorgeous peony type tulip Angelique.   I've grown it in the past and it is really lovely.

I haven't tried many asters over the years, I'm not sure why.  This Lady Coral Lavender Aster from Johnny's may be worth taking a chance on.

DOA In The Virtual Garden

Not my own, so much,  (until the garden catalogs start coming in) but Thursdays seem like a good day to share what I've seen lately that's garden related.



Via the Impatient Gardener, did you know there were are Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter cactus?  I thought there were only Christmas Cactus.

Via the Old Moss Woman's Secret Garden,  there have been some clever new ways to decorate with pumpkins lately, but a pumpkin pirate ship!  That's quite a sight.

I am also becoming enamored of all sorts of begonias.   Isn't this pretty from the Houseplant Guru?

Garden Planning 2017: Perennials

I've deconstructed and grassed over 90 % of my perennial gardens, so there isn't room for much.  I find myself wanting a few very large hostas nonetheless, maybe a couple of pink peonies, and in a rare sunny spot a rose or two.

Many of the garden catalogs that were in business when I was at the height of my gardening time are now gone.  Locally, most garden centers that I enjoyed visiting are gone as well.  I certainly miss them, particularly Linders.

There are still a few wonderful mail order garden sources.  I'm thinking of seeing what I can find next spring.

Klehm's Song Sparrow Farm and Nursery used to be just Klehm's.  They've always had a beautiful selection of perennials and peonies.  If I could only order from one company, they'd be it.

I ordered from them quite a bit in my early years.  Their selection has always been amazing, but I was not always happy with what arrived in the mail.  I saw an article recently on them trying to preserve a particular plant and its varieties, so I thought I'd try them once more.

I waited a long time to order from Jung, and I wish I had not.  They have much more than seeds, plants, shrubs, trees, all very nice upon arrival.  Also a wide selection of garden supplies you wont find elsewhere.

Well Sweep has a vast selection of herbs and perennials.  You'll almost certainly find what you're looking for here.  They offer soaps, oils and books to help you be successful. There are so many varieties of each plant type, it is lovely just browsing and dreaming.

Roses of Yesterday and Today

I don't know about you, but I've been in the mood to grow roses again.   With the demise of so many local nurseries, the selection of roses is almost non-existent here.  You might see those short cascading varieties....I can't think of the name.  No selection at all, if they even carry roses.

Enter Roses of Yesterday and Today with their lovely name and wonderful selection of roses from many eras.  I'm certain I'll find something to love here.

DOA In The Garden : Quickshots

We discovered the bunnies have made their home under our shed.  One of the cats got under there last year and there's no way you can get a reluctant animal out, that we know.

I've been barricading my vegetable garden with chicken wire, hardware cloth panels, boards...anything at all to make it harder to get in and decimate the vegetables. 

One year I told my aunt the garden had been hit with everything that season but a plague of locusts.  I hope this isn't another such year.

I'm concentrating on re-doing the perennial garden of the yard, and it is looking pretty nice.  Rain tonight should make it even more lush.
