Everyone in Horseshoe Bay is sleeping badly because of nightmares that they're increasingly unable to stay out of. The Drew Crew is no exception.
Each character puts themselves in the way of harm in the real world as they struggle against what is in their dreams.
Naturally everyone tries to stay awake, but they just keep dropping off.
Only Bess is able to fight off the dreams thanks to help from Temperance, who has been training Bess. With Ryan's help, they identify the culprit as The Sandman. There is a yearly ritual in Horseshoe Bay honoring him that did not happen this year, and he's wreaking havoc.
Bess not only saves the day, she chastises everyone for not taking her seriously. She says she's going to create a Modern version of The Women in White, she feels she is destined to do so.
It appears to me that this sets up, at some point, a battle between The Modern Women In White and the Modern Day version of The Road Back, a group of men who were driven out of Horseshoe Bay where they began by The Women In White.
Oddly Temperance, who was exiled by her own Women In White group, will likely be siding with Bess's Group, and the Road Back, likely behind the Frozen Heart Murders, will be fighting for dominance. Something like that!
