Five Things Friday 5/29/26
Welcome back to Five Things Friday. I’ve been pootling around in Facebook again, which means I take screenshots of everything that interests me. I think I captioned the Things in the past but I’m guessing no one ever read those captions so I’ll just let the Things speak for themselves.

These bananas still have lots of yellow. Banana bread incoming!
From Vintage Recipes, the Magic Spice Cake sounds good, but not so much the creamy nut filling which turns out to also be the frosting. Lukewarm paste?
From the English Kitchen Chicken and Garlic Potatoes. Very nice.

DOA's Vegetable Soup
Looking at numerous Vegetable Soup Recipes, I created this recipe which probably needs tweaking, but it was very good. Not so dominated by tomatoes as those using canned tomatoes.
1/2 Medium onion diced
4 cloves garlic diced
3 small red potatoes, not peeled, cubed
1 cup sweet potato, cubed
4 carrots thick sliced
4 celery stalks thick sliced
1 large fresh tomato cut into cubes
1 tbsp tomato paste
3 tbsp butter
2 tbsp olive oil
32 oz Chicken Broth
1 tsp salt
3 turns of black pepper grinder
1/4 tsp oregano
1/4 tsp basil
1 bay leaf
In dutch oven, heat butter and olive oil on medium high heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook approx 2 mins or until softened. Add all other vegetables, stir, turn heat to medium and cook 3 minutes.
Add spices. Add chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then simmer 45 minutes or until carrots are soft.

Boston Cream Doughnuts! They look like quite a bit of work, and I'd halve the recipe, but yum.

All I can think when I see these is that the middle tumblers looked pretty but always tasted like dish soap.
An alternative to a large carrot cake, is Chocolate, Chocolate and More's Carrot Cake Loaf. I think I have the ingredients on hand!

It's February, unofficially Chocolate Month because of all the chocolate that goes out around the fourteenth, right?
So, dark, dark chocolate is here for you:

Time to try another French Onion Soup recipe. This version via Vintage Recipes seems easy to follow, and they let you substitute beef bouillon for red wine, very useful for those of us who don't care for wine.
Note the whole chicken in the recipe below.
All I could think of was the poor chicken saying nooooo.

I loved dishes like these. They could make a child feel so grown up. If only I'd still had a set when I got my Easy Bake Oven, also a real treasure😉
From Vintage Recipes, variations on biscuit dough. The Individual Chicken Shortcakes with "hot creamed chicken" sounds like a nice way to use leftovers.
I wish I had a cabinet like this, and colorful dishes to display inside.
Pass the chocolate!

I don't believe I've ever had a chimichanga at all. They sound very good, and this recipe offers a fried version and an oven baked version.

I'm going to put on a costume and go to this lady's house! My favorites, Butterfingers and Baby Ruth in full sized bars!
Check with mom before you use her kitchen!
We've got some real fans of Little Smokies in this house. I wonder if they'd approve of the Apple Butter.

So, you want to make an Angel Food Cake, but could never commit to 12 egg whites to make one from scratch. A cheapo box version is the way to go. The batter tastes vaguely fizzy, not quite citrus. Also good news, you don’t need to grease your Angel Food Cake pan. This delicate wonder doesn’t stick to the pan.

From the English Kitchen, a set of small batch cookies and bars. It makes sense to bake in these smaller quantities so your home baked goods are always nice and fresh.

Did you know parmesan cheese (Well, the Kraft grated I use mostly) is pretty low calorie? Yum!
A strange yet sweet character.
I meant to get the ingredients for these Pumpkin Pie Streusel Bars last week. Try try again.
