Traveling Tuesday August 24, 2021

Last week was our first Friday in awhile with no adventure.  We look back to a year ago, then, when we thought we'd rent a very different sort of camper than the Scamp, a Jayco Redhawk Class C RV.  This week I'll talk about the camper itself, next week about our ramble through Iowa.

It's an all in one camper.  No towing. Just you zooming down the road with your spouse and beagle.

That's the layout for the 22 ft we rented.  It was a 2020 model so it was gorgeous, pristine, and looked like a really nice apartment inside.

Plenty of storage (though you have no access to the wardrobe unless you're stopped with the pullout fully extended.)

The driver's and passenger seats were very comfortable.  Good leg room, a spot for your coffee cup..

In between the seats up front on the floor was a space perfectly sized for the beagle's cozy bed.  He curled up there contentedly as we traveled, as if he'd been travelling by RV all his life.

Lots of room in the fridge and freezer.

That grail of camper features, a full bath with shower.

There's a curtain to pull across the cab area at night so everyone walking by doesn't see you lounging in your jammies.

Oddity and big drawback: there is only one electrical outlet in the dining/kitchen area.  It is located on the side of the sink right by the door.  This is the only place to plug in your toaster and coffee pot.  You have to set something over the sink and set the toaster and coffee pot on that one at a time in order to use them.  No plug-in (s) at the dinette at all.

The other locations with outlets in the camper are the bathroom and one on each side of the bed.

Speaking of storage, there are very small narrow outside storage bins.

By giving up your tow vehicle, you give up considerable storage for things like your lawn chairs, traveling table, traveling dog kennel, your tools, any cooking utensils or larger items from your camping list.  It all has to fit inside with you.

We put them on the side of the compressed bed and used blankets to pad them so they wouldn't float around much.

Next week, Iowa in a weekend. Sort of.

  1. We used to see campers like this towing a small car. To me, the biggest advantage would be having to take the whole thing for a small errand into town. But it does look gorgeous.

  2. Sure, this size and larger often are seen towing a car, so you’re more mobile. That is what you’d need to do.
