Old Window Frames As Garden Art

Shared by the Empress of Dirt, I love these old window frames painted cheerful colors and hung on a garden wall.   I tried to do a bit of decorating of my garden walls this year, but the effort was small.   These seem like something I could do that would really stand out.

Ball Jam and Jelly Maker

Flamingo Toes: Linen Display Rack

From the Flamingo Toes Blog, some time ago, perhaps, a neat idea for displaying your nicer dish towels.  I've come to really like the linen types as opposed to terry cloth.  They're prettier, sometimes artful, and I think they dry dishes well, and dry out faster.

You might see a rack like this at some vintage goods place or garage sale, and see a new use for it.

The Christmas Chronicles (Netflix)

Here's a new Christmas Movie for 2018.  It stars Kurt Russell as a Santa caught on film by two kids, who then sneak into his sleigh and cause havoc with Christmas Eve deliveries.

He's a pretty with-it Santa Clause, rocking out in the jailhouse at one point, and spreading happiness as only Santa can.   He may be one of the best Santas Ever.

The kids in the movie hold it back from being a classic.  The girl is sort of borderline whiny throughout, and the boy was more convincing when he was being snappish than when he was joyful.

Santa's Elves reminded me quite a bit of the 80s movie Gremlins.  With Scandinavian of some sort accents.

Santa's bag was a revelation, as it kept filling from a giant conveyor belt at the North Pole.

I loved Goldie Hawn was Mrs Claus.

The author may think the information is properly aimed at beginners, but there's solid advice for anyone who gardens.   In addition to pouring over garden catalogs and making huge lists, doing some garden reading is inspiring. There are many wonderful garden essayists, from Vita Sackville West to Ken Druse.

Researching the bugs and fungi that invaded your garden last year is a great idea.  Except you'll never see me looking at bug pictures.   The worst thing for me as a librarian was to have someone come up to the desk with a jar of any size in hand.  Screeeeeaaammm!!!   The trick is not to look at the jar, while sidling through the stacks to the bug identification books and agh, the pest control section as well, then slinking away before they ask you to look at pictures with them.

I always think your should try growing whatever you'd like.  Some things will live, some will die, all will be interesting.

Have a notebook and start writing in it right now.  Gardening season 2019 has already begun.

I09's Lois Lanes Ranked

Superman has been my favorite Superhero forever, from my comics reading days.  I confess I never liked Lois Lane, and wished he'd go for Lana Lang.  Alas.  Still, a couple weren't too bad.

A Mitten Garland!

Smithsonian: The Math of Spot It!

 I spent some time earlier this year playing Spot It! with my sister-in-law.   It is really a fun and quick moving little game.  You try to be the first to match a picture on your card with one that has just been turned face up.  With so few pictures on each card, it didn't seem possible that every time one person or the other would have a match, but there it was.   When I got my husband to try it, he liked it, but almost immediately went off mumbling about the Math of it.

It turns out he was right!  It's all some diabolical math game.  Arrgghh!

Travelers on Netflix Returns Today!

 This series ended last season explosively, as they say, with the Travelers all exposed, and the lives they'd built in the current day destroyed.    It was one of those endings that could have served as a series ender, because, how could they continue to fiddle with events in a timeline that now knew what they were up to?  Luckily, one whole year later, we get to see how they can continue their work.  Maybe we'll get a larger glimpse of the future they come from as well.

Generated by the Pantone Institute, the Color of the Year for 2019 that will appear everywhere (apparently) is Living Coral.

Not quite orange, not quite pink, I actually like the shade.   I'm mostly aware of the Color of the Year via the crochet and yarn sites I follow.   Since I'm currently looking for some peach shades to add to my yarn stock, this might be a nice choice, as long as it's a soft version.

A Fallen Phrase Puzzle

Let's try a new type of puzzle to round out 2018's post count!   This is a new type of puzzle to me, but I like the possibilities of it. 

Basically, there's a grid with an odd looking mix of letters below the grid.  You slide letters into the columns above to create words that eventually spell out a phrase provided by your Puzzle Mistress (Me).

For instance, the F at the far left slots right into the first box at the left.   The next column of letters, M, G, E, G will fit into the spaces directly above...somehow.

When Half A Pie Will Do

I love making pies.  There is seldom an occasion to make one, because I can't eat one all by myself.  Still, PIE.

My husband won't eat pie, but he took five pictures of my Thanksgiving Apple Pie (From the Pillsbury Cookbook) because he liked the looks of it so much.

It was a very fine pie.  So was the pumpkin.   I'd like to try more pies, but will need to downsize them.

Maybe, I could find a half pie pan.  They sell half pies at Cub.  Do they have a half pie pan?  After much searching, I think not.   I think they use a divided pan such as the one below.

With a divided pan, so you could make two different pies, or, hmmm if it was a freezable pie, you could just freeze half.

I could make a six inch pie, which I should be able to manage.   Maybe this size is almost a tart, which I could definitely eat.

Survivor David Vs Goliath

This season of Survivor has been one of the best in a long time.  Filled with likeable characters and a few villains, the votes have swung all over, defying tribal lines.

Unlikely favorite (though he has been my favorite all along) Christian the Robotics Guy has been targeted at Tribal over and over.

Last night, even his alleged closest ally went gunning for him, after the Family Reunion where Christian's girlfriend, whom he clearly adored, entered the picture.

Gabby, who has cried more than any other Survivor, ever, I'm sure of it, suddenly knew she had to stand up for herself and make a big, jealousy tinged move.   She knew Christian had an idol, but she was sure she and others could fool him into not using it.  Because she's so powerful.

Christian, making a big, broad turn and looking all the jury members in the eye, pulled out his idol.  Gabby went home.  He he he.

I fear the only way he can be saved next time out is to find another idol or win the immunity challenge, which he is very capable of doing.  It would be insanely great if he found another idol and won immunity.   Then two other people would have to be picked off, getting him in closer to the Final Three.  If he's in the Final Three, he has the million.
